Here’s a question that is often spoken – and often unspoken. ‘Is it OK to touch while I’m receiving touch?’
The guiding principle in massage is to work toward total relaxation of the mind and body. To the extent that uncertainty can occupy and stress the mind it is important to put this question to rest and thus rest the mind.
The short answer is ideally – Yes – exchange of touch is entirely OK.
Massage can have the effect of seeming to magnify our natural energy. As the massage progresses and the mind starts to relax and wander the body will energize physically and some of that energy will begin to flow to the relaxed mind. It’s natural to want to reach out and transfer some of that energy. In doing so the energy delivered in the massage is further enhanced.
The fact is that energy is built as much by touching as by being touched. Without receiving touch or having the opportunity to touch we are deprived of a critical part of our experiential potential.
Of course it is entirely acceptable and possible to enjoy a full body massage without exploring reciprocal touch.
When we imagine traveling further down the Tantric path, however, it’s important to clear any imaginary barriers. Tantric practice and massage allows touch and touching, seeing and being seen, feeling and being felt. It is true that receiving touch to relax the mind also often extends to giving touch. Both experiences are the product of the same energy.
So, while so many full body massage techniques provide a wonderfully relaxing and stimulating experience, Tantric massage is one of the few that recognizes that complete relaxation requires the engagement of our potential to distribute energy as well as receive it.
Tantric massage will always acknowledge the power of interaction, looking to find the most complete and relaxed state of mind and body.
